New Trees in Stoke Bishop

Thank you to Helen who has forwarded an update from the Druid Fountain Neighbourhood Watch and Residents Association about the trees in Stoke Bishop .

As you may remember, last year Helen kindly made a donation to their fund in Clare's memory.

They have now updated local residents:

Residents may have noticed that two new trees have been planted in the village - one, a fastigiate tulip tree, outside the dentist and the other, an oak, by the Fountain. These were planted as a result of the fund raising efforts of our members in February last year so thank you to all who contributed.

Thank you again Helen for your kind donation, Clare would love that you have 2 new trees which will remind you of her.

Donation to MESSS

This week, a year after we lost Clare, Chris has made a significant donation to MESSS on behalf of the Clare Winsor Foundation.

MESSS is the Mainland Enhancement of Salmonoid Species Society , a long-established charity formed to enable interested members to engage in the active enhancement of salmon on Gilford Island and mainland inlets in the Broughton Archipelago in British Columbia, Canada.

Clare and Chris spent a wonderful holiday staying at Blackfish Lodge and fishing the archipelago in 2018 and fell in love with the area. Chris went back last year to scatter some of Clare's ashes and became aware of MESSS through Hannah and Chris Bennett who are Board Members of MESSS and run Blackfish Lodge.

The money donated will be used to buy, deliver and position 30 bags of gravel in Embley Creek to improve the environment for the salmon.

"For this project we will try to do the area around the beaver dam and down to just above tidewater. All the area where you and I saw the fish. We can order the gravel for the late spring and fly it into place by helicopter," Chris Bennett told us.

He also told us about how they'd already tried this method of re-gravelling and seen big improvements:

"We talked about putting gravel in Embley as well as exposing as much natural gravel as may be there and we are all in favour of this. We also met with fisheries and our community salmon enhancement adviser. We took them up the road and showed them a couple places where we had put gravel. It looked beautiful where we put the gravel and they were really impressed. We also looked at some spots that we did not put gravel. Big difference. The first project demonstrates what can be done and encourages funding for more."

It is anticipated that this project will be done in Spring 2023, we'll keep you updated!

Tree Loss in Stoke Bishop

Wrong Tree, Wrong Place

Project Number 1 in Clare's Memory

HB, a very good friend of Clare's, heard about 2 beautiful trees which were due to be felled in her village.

One is a Silver Maple, which is a big tree, growing near shops in the centre of the village. It had been pollarded in recent years as it was touching a building, and it's known that Silver Maples don't tollerate pollarding well. Since then half of the tree appears to have died, and the Bristol Tree Officer is of the opinion the whole tree will go the same way in due course. Apparently it was the wrong tree to have been planted in this location.

The second tree is a Rowan near the Druid Fountain which has been dead for some time.

The local community was asked to pay for replacement trees as the local council unfortunately had no funding left in it's 'tree pot'. HB thought of the Clare Winsor Foundation, and although the trees are not in Frenchay she knew Clare would have loved to have been able to help, and so made a substantial contribution in Clare's memory to replace them.
